Artists have taken liberty with many cars over the entire history of the internal combustion engine powered automobile.  Most notably are the BMWs that have been adorned with modern art for decades. Bentley has now served up its first so-called art car: a Continental GTC done by Sir Peter Blake, the “godfather of British pop art.”

This first “art car” from Crewe was created for a great cause, the Care2Save Charitable Trust.  It will be auctioned off for charity by Bonhams on June 24th at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.  Care2Save provides palliative and hospice care around the world.

“Sir Peter has designed a strikingly colourful car, encapsulating exactly why he is thought of as one of Britain’s leading artists. It was a fascinating project to be part of, particularly for the skilled artisans in our bespoke Mulliner division, who worked closely with Sir Peter to bring this design to life,” said Kevin Rose, Bentley Board Member for Sales and Marketing.

“We have proudly supported the Care2Save Charitable Trust and the hospice movement for more than 25 years and so take great delight from donating this inimitable car for such a worthwhile cause.”

Sir Peter, as he is known, has a lengthy career producing notable art but is perhaps best know for designing the album art for The Beatles iconic Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album.  For this project with Bentley, he worked through the pallet of colors available from Bentley’s Mulliner division to design this special GTC.  For the exterior, Sir Peter chose a special shade of blue, which he names St. Luke’s Blue in homage to Bentley’s local St Luke’s Cheshire Hospice.

The hood has a Peter Blake trademark red heart in one of our favorite colors: St. James Red.  The heart is painted on a Continental Yellow hood.  The lower bodywork and aero is painted British Racing Green while the radiator steel was painted Fuchsia.  Blake chose to not have the car’s brightwork compete with his bright paint choices so all of the exterior brightwork is painted gloss black.

The interior is finished in four Bentley leathers: Cumbrian Green, Imperial Blue, Newmarket Tan and Hotspur.  These colors were chosen off the rack to match with the exterior paint colors.  The steering wheel has a Hotspur outer rim, a Newmarket Tan inner rim and a Cumbrian Green airbag cover.  It’s stitched in Imperial Blue.

To complement the bright pink radiator grill, the gear selector is trimmed with a custom bright pink leather.  The rest of the interior is finished with Bentley’s Piano Black wood veneers.  Sir Peter’s signature is incorporated onto the fascia panel and embroidered on all four seat headrests. To complete the interior, unique storage cases in Piano Black veneers were designed.  The insides of the cases are trimmed in bright Continental Yellow and St James Red linings to reflect the hood.  The doors sills are finished with unique tread plates signifying that this is “No. 1 of 1.”

“I am proud to have been involved with transforming this beautiful car, and have enormous admiration for the people at Bentley who brought my design into being, to produce this one-off lovely car.” – Sir Peter Blake

The Continental GTC art car isn’t the first Bentley to be donated to Care2sSave this year.  If you’ve been paying attention on social media, then you may have seen that the Bentley By Me campaign was launched earlier this year (2016) to benefit Care2Save.  People from around the world were invited to donate any amount from £1 on up to help the charity and have the opportunity to win a Bentley.
