The Goodwood Festival of Speed has come and gone once again. One of the happenings that was interesting to watch this year was a battle that took shape between former roommates Bentley and Rolls-Royce.

The main attraction of the U.K. celebration of all things automotive is the hill climb. All sorts of entries line up for their shot at the hill including race cars, private entries and factory entries. The course is a 1.16 mile long, narrow, windy blacktop. Lined with hay bales and cheering fans, the course climbs 300 feet over it’s length at an average gradient of 4.9 percent.

The current official standing record is 41.6 seconds. The record was set in 1999 by Nick Heidfeld at the helm of a McLaren MP4/13 Formula 1 car.

Rolls-Royce brought a new Wraith to the show. The big, luxury two door put down an impressive 57.21 second run, crossing the finish line at 106mph. The Wraith time was good enough for sixth overall in class, besting a 2013 Maserati Granturismo MC Stradale and the 2016 Bentley Continental GT W12.

Bentley came back swinging however, with the lauded Bentley Continental GT3-R. The 4.0l twin-turbo rocketed up the hill in 56.91 seconds for fifth overall. The quickest time for a stock car was a 51.33 second time from a 2011 Noble M600. Behind the Noble was a ’11 Lexus LF-A, a ’16 Aston Martin Vantage GT12, and a ’16 Porsche Cayman GT4.
