2016 wasn’t a great year for all of us, but it certainly was for Bentley Motors. The U.K. maker of luxury automobiles added “SUV” to the list of products they make and it helped the company sell a record 11,023 cars. That makes 2016 the four year in a row that Bentley has exceeded 10,000 units.

The Americas, which includes all of North and South America, remained Bentley’s number one region, accounting for 25% of sales. The company did not break out sales by models but it is easy to guess that the Bentayga made a significant impact. In Europe and the U.K., sales were up to 2,676 cars delivered vs. 2015’s 1,695. Do you the difference between the two regions? The answer lies with the EPA.

The Bentayga went on sale in Europe in 2015 and Bentley got an entire year of sales out of it. In the U.S., where the VW diesel scandal caused issues for all of VW’s brands, the Bentayga had difficulties gaining approval from regulators. The Bentley truck didn’t arrive to the US until May and Bentley wasn’t able to deliver any until August. The demand helped propel Bentley sales in the U.S., but the total numbers were down by 72 units to 2,792.

Commenting on the results, Bentley’s Member of the Board for Sales, Marketing and Aftersales, Dr. Andreas Offermann said, “Our globally-balanced sales success indicates the strength of our brand and products. We introduced a total of six new model variants in 2016 and increased our presence around the world, adding 20 new retailers to make a total of 210 partners in 59 markets.”

Judging by Bentley’s record breaking sales in the U.S. during the last few months of the year, 2017 should be a pretty healthy year.
